Side Lying

Side lying is a great alternative to lying on their backs when playing and needing a break from tummy time. It will help keep the pressure off the same spot when on their backs to assist in maintaining their head shape. It encourages hands to midline for feeding and playing with toys. It also encourages cognitive development as it provides a different perspective to their world. Practicing both left and right will be important. If they do not stay by themselves, you can use towel rolls to keep them in place BUT only if you are supervising them 100% of the time in the same room and not with a baby monitor in another room. The towel can move and so we need to ensure safety.

You will use the same towel roll technique used when trying to keep them in tummy time in the below video but position them like the above picture once you have rolled the towels.
