Reaching in Tummy Time

Reaching for toys in front of them, typically starts in the 4th month when they are getting better at tummy time. Many parents make the mistake of placing the toys too far in front of their babies when they are first learning. Ideally start your baby in the in the optimal tummy time position described in my previous post and place the toys directly in front of their hands, touching their hands. This will encourage them to open their hands before they are strong enough to lift their arms to reach. As they get better at it, you can place the toys further away encouraging them to extend their arms out in front of them. If they are opening their hands to grab the toy that is touching their hands but their arms seem stuck to the floor, you can start helping them practice. Shifting their weight onto one elbows and reaching with the other hand is how they will do it.

Check out the video for hand placement on how to help them.
